Marking Bodies: A Catalogue of Keffiyehs
in Producing Palestine - The Creative Production of Palestine Through Contemporary Media, edited by Helga Tawil-Souri and Dina Matar - I.B.Tauris - 2024
This chapter analyses the keffiyeh as a marker of the Palestinian body, mapping its changing uses and meanings. This visual cataloguing acts as means to visually hone in on the specific importance of the keffiyeh as a marker. It traces the nature of the garment and the ways in which changing contexts, deployments, and networks of circulation have mobilized the keffiyeh as a marker to create new, often contradictory, meanings of the Palestinian body in popular culture.
It catalogues a chronology that shows the changing trajectory of the keffiyeh and, implicitly, the changing trajectories of performing Palestinian-ness by Palestinians and non-Palestinians alike. In doing so, it engages with a series of keffiyehs drawn from a range of twentieth-century source material to consider the confluence of nationalism, indigeneity, religion, class, gender, and transgression through the keffiyeh as a marker. Each keffiyeh is isolated as a constituent element of various modes of marking Palestinian-ness through a process that homogenizes them as archetypes in producing this “catalogue.”
